Randy Orton Week: RKOPG- A Viper in Mizville!

on September 13, 2015 at 10:03 pm

rkopgcover

Lo and forsooth! Welcome to the RKOPG, A Viper in Mizville! It’s a fantastical world in which Ortons from across space and time, spanning across galaxies, have joined together for adventures and RKOs! Past versions of the Orton we know will join with future Ortons, medieval Ortons, and beyond! Will you accept the challenge and take up the mantle of the angriest and orangest man in creation? Will you play it safe and help the citizens of Mizville? Or will you RKO everyone possible (even though this may break the game)? Only YOU can decide! …Unless you’re stuck as the Game Master though, but then you at least get to roll for monsters, so that’s cool, right? Right?

This RKOPG will run like a stripped down Dungeons & Dragons with RKO elements, so if you’re familiar with D&D, you should be in good hands. If not, I’ll have explanations of how it will all work.

Each day this week I will be updating the blog on the home page with a new bit of info about the game, like a new version of Orton to play as, different opponents you will face, or details about the world or battle system. Then on Friday I will release a big pdf with all of the info presented in one easy guide and a campaign, “A Viper in Mizville”, to play through! To be honest this is a completely new endeavor for me, so if it’s unclear or the game breaks or anything, please be patient with me and pretend that this is all an advanced “beta” mode and I waived the early-access fee!

Each day will reveal a new playable Orton character and today starts us off with a classic: The Legend Killer Randy Orton! Pulled from Orton’s own past, the “Legend Killer” arrives in Mizville ready to show why he’s the best! Cocky and headstrong, this young version of Orton can charm the pants off of most anyone- if he’s not pooping in their bag, that is!

Battleground 2015 Predictions

on July 19, 2015 at 5:19 pm

When Battleground was announced to be taking place in St. Louis (where I currently live) several months ago, I said screw it. While I typically enjoy seeing WWE live, I’d had my fill of the crowded arenas, poor views, and getting stuck in the Scottrade Center parking garage for hours waiting to get out after the shows. And what was “Battleground” anyway? Just another throwaway Pay Per View that nothing will happen at?

Well now I regret that decision. Cena vs. Owens, Rollins vs. Brock, potentially the NXT divas PPV debut… It actually looks like an amazing show! By the time I realized it, however, it was too late to buy tickets, unless I want the cheap seats or to pay $300 for a seat. Ah well, I’ll still enjoy it at home where I don’t have to pay $7 for a beer and $10 for a slice of pizza. On with the predictions!

R-Truth vs. King Barrett for the right to be the one true king
I have a feeling that “King What’s Up” will be used in a study someday on WWE being racist assholes. I don’t know why WWE continually buries the credibility of the King of the Ring, but I’m completely over it by this point. I think Barrett will win because if he can lose his right to the throne in a pre show match, then the name really would lose any of the prestige it had left. Yup, that tiny little bit.
Who will win: King Barrett

Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt
I’ve enjoyed this more than the typical Roman Reigns or Bray Wyatt feud, but I can’t say it’s a match I’m really excited to see. Wyatt is so vague in his promos that it’s hard for me to really care why he’s having imaginary tea parties with Roman’s daughter, and Roman’s response to the situation (as in not immediately calling the police) is a bit of a stretch for me. It’s hard to call this match because WWE is not afraid to let either of these up and coming stars lose, but I think I’m giving Reigns the edge on this one because the losses don’t seem to impact Wyatt as much.
Who will win: Roman

Randy Orton vs. Sheamus
It’s funny how Reigns vs. Wyatt involves weird lighting, cut out photos, and tea parties… and all it takes for Orton vs. Sheamus is for one of them to randomly attack the other one. I really feel like this is just filler so Orton can wrestle in his hometown. And since it IS in Orton’s hometown you kind of know how this is going to go.
Who will win: Sheamus

The Prime Time Players vs. The New Day for the Tag Titles
I really love both of these teams (especially The New Day), so I’m really looking forward to seeing them fight over the titles. I was honestly surprised when the PTP won them because I thought New Day were going to have a lengthy reign, but now that Young and O’Neil have them I’m thinking that they’ll hold on to them for a while instead. I guess it’s just safer to bet on the champions.
Who will win: The Prime Time Players

John Cena vs. Kevin Owens for the US Title
I’m firmly believing that Owens dropped the NXT title so he can win the US Title from Cena. I think if he were to leave his feud with Cena having lost most of the matches and also having nothing to show from it, he’d be wandering around the card aimlessly within a month. That’s not so much a prediction as EXACTLY what happened to Rusev and Wyatt after Cena beat them in two out of three matches. While I think Cesaro’s great and I’ve really enjoyed his involvement in Cena and Owens’ feud, I’m hoping that this match stays a singles match with no interference.
Who will win: Owens

Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar for the World Heavyweight Championship
I hate to say it, but I just can’t see this match ending cleanly. I know that Lesnar has taken out the Authority except for Triple H and Stephanie, who seem to only be part time members despite being the only ones with any actual authority. Seth might run away for a count out, he might be disqualified for using a weapon, but if Lesnar walks out as champ I will be surprised. I guess I can’t shake the feeling that this is only a filler PPV and nothing major will happen at it.
Who will win: Rollins

So that’s it, with only six matches scheduled to take place! I’m sure there will be at least a Divas segment, if not a last minute match. Ambrose might wrestle Bo Dallas? It would be nice for some of these matches to get extra time, but honestly other than Cena vs. Owens and Rollins vs. Lesnar, I’m not sure I’d want to see anything go over 15 minutes.

My First LIVE Ring of Honor Show

on June 8, 2015 at 9:19 pm

When my wife, Lindsay, and I went to our first live Ring of Honor show this past Friday it was the first time I’ve watched Ring of Honor in a while. I’ve tried getting into Ring of Honor’s tv show a few different times now and for whatever reason it never really grabbed me. I started regularly watching it when they first signed on with Sinclair, mostly to support independent wrestling and watch Kevin Steen sassing Jim Cornette and Davey Richards. But then there was a stable called SCUM, and other stuff kept getting in the way… so when we bought tickets to see them in Collinsville, Illinois I was fairly out of touch with the product, but still excited to see a wrestling show that was different, more intimate, and that wouldn’t involve me being stuck in a parking garage for an hour. I’m not really sure if they were recording it for tv, dvds, or if it was just a live show… Though Kevin Kelly and Steve Corino were there doing commentary, so I’m not really sure!

Despite being out of touch with the product, Lindsay and I had a blast at the show! I would roughly guess there were a few hundred people there (a legit sellout, standing room only), but the seats were all still really close to the ring. The fans were into the show the whole time and seemed very familiar with all the wrestlers. Nothing against little kids or anything, but it was also nice to be at a show where there weren’t kids screaming all night long, except for one adorable little kid who kept trying to get a “this is awesome” chant going all throughout the night- even before the show started. While I haven’t had much luck getting into the Ring of Honor television show, seeing it live gelled much more with me, probably because I was focused on the in ring action and not constantly distracted by Twitter, cats, dishes, the dog, laundry, etc.

Just about all of the matches were really great. The standout to me was Dalton Castle vs. Mike Bennett with Maria and Matt Taven. I didn’t really know who Castle was to start with (I later discovered I’d only seen him once before in Chikara as Smooth Sailin’ Ashley Remmington), but I was really impressed with his wrestling skills and how dedicated he was to his, uh, peacock strutting gimmick. Bennett, Taven, and Maria were also awesome in this match and later on when Taven fought Hansen from War Machine. The whole group of them really kept the matches fun and enjoyable by screwing around with the other wrestlers and referees, pointing out fan signs, and interacting a lot with the audience.

The Addiction (Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian) vs. Delirious and Matt Sydal was also really fun to watch and the crowd was really into it (probably in part because Matt Sydal is from St. Louis, only a short drive away). The Addiction were also pretty funny too, with Daniels telling us that Collinsville smelled like ass and feet wrapped up in armpit (I laughed).

All of the other matches were great too, such as Adam Page vs. Mark Briscoe, War Machine’s Raymond Rowe vs. Jay Lethal, and Cheeseburger vs. Silas Young. The crowd was actually split right down the middle for Cheeseburger vs. Young, with lots of audience members chanting “last real man” (Young’s catchphrase) during the match. Isn’t it a little weird though to chant that someone else is the last real man? What does that make you? I digress… The main event saw Jay Briscoe and Rodrick Strong take on Moose and Michael Elgin, in a match that got the crowd super hyped. Not to sound like a grade school teacher or anything, but I thought the crowd was a little harsh on Moose, chanting “Goldberg” at him non-stop, even though he spent most of the match getting the crap kicked out of him.

The only bad match on the show was The Romantic Touch vs. B.J. Whitmer. I’m not sure if it was because it took place right after the intermission or what, but the crowd was dead. Dead, dead, dead. Towards the end of the match some people at least began heckling Touch, but for most of the match it was just silence. Personally I was a little put off by his offense consisting of kissing and grinding on Whitmer. Maybe I thought it was funny when Rico did it in 2004, but I feel like we should’ve moved past that by now.

The whole show was awesome though, and I’d easily recommend it to anyone who has any interest in wrestling. Even though Lindsay and I barely knew who the wrestlers were or what storylines were going on we still loved it way more than the last WWE house show we went to. I’ll admit that part of it was the atmosphere of the hardcore wrestling fans, part of it was that all the seats were really close, but most of all it was due to the skill of the men and women (well, the two of them) involved. I imagine a lot of you already watch Ring of Honor and enjoy it, but for those of you who haven’t given it a chance or think that it’s only full of WWE rejects, please give it a shot.
