NXT TakeOver: Toronto and Survivor Series Prediction Review!

on November 21, 2016 at 1:49 pm

Two days ago I posted predictions for NXT TakeOver: Toronto and Survivor Series. What did I get right and what did I miss? Did I forsee Goldberg squashing Lesnar in three moves? Did anyone? Let’s take a look:

NXT TakeOver: Toronto

I didn’t do too bad on TakeOver, with four predictions right and only one wrong. Bobby Roode beating Dillinger was easy for me to call because Roode is still on his way up and I think Dillinger’s on his way out (to the main roster, not getting fired). I also correctly called both tag matches, with DIY picking up the belts and the Authors of Pain picking up the trophy. The tag title match was a thing of beauty, with both teams showing why they deserve to be the top teams in NXT. TM 61 hit some nice spots in their match, but it will ultimately be remembered for how much the crane looked like the toy it was based on than anything either team did.

I was expecting Asuka vs. Mickie James to be great and it blew away my expectations. Mickie was the first competitor that presented a real challenge to Asuka and it was a nice change to see her sell for a bit. I saw people complaining about the quick end, but I thought it was a good way of showing that once Asuka has her lock in, the match is over. I thought Shinsuke and Joe’s match was great even though it was my only missed prediction of the night. These two always have great matches together, but I’m not really excited for this feud to continue, even with Nakamura now chasing Joe for the NXT Championship.

Survivor Series

I didn’t do quite as well with my Survivor Series predictions. While I called Miz successfully defending his championship correctly, I was really surprised by Baron Corbin ruining the cruiserweight division’s chance to move to Smackdown. Honestly, after Baron interfered and called the cruiserweights “little pests”, I’m feeling like Vince has given up on the division and it makes me want to give up on them too.

As far as the traditional elimination matches go, I was right about the Raw women and the single Smackdown men (I don’t know what else to call them) winning, but missed on the tag. Who could’ve seen the New Day getting eliminated so quickly? Who? Who? All of the matches were kind of a fun mess, and even though they didn’t count for anything, there were some memorable spots. The Shield and Wyatt Family reunion was a nice end to the single men’s match and almost made up for Braun sloppily dumping AJ out of the ring and Shane getting KO’d by Roman’s spear earlier in the night.

I totally blew it on predicting the main event! I said there wasn’t a surer bet than Lesnar winning. Whoops! While I know a few people predicted Goldberg winning, I don’t think anyone saw him winning with just three moves. I feel conflicted about the result though. At first I thought it was a great feel good moment and it was awesome to see Brock put in his place… but then I remembered how many guys he dominated in the past few years. So a guy can take twelve years off, train for a few weeks, and then squash a man who can beat main eventers like Randy Orton and Dean Ambrose with a series of German suplexes? No wonder WWE can’t build any new stars. I’m just going to try and enjoy it for what it was and not worry about what could have been.

Overall I predicted four out of five TakeOver matches and three out of six Survivor Series matches correctly. Not my best, but I think all Sunday night WWE was trying to surprise us. I think TakeOver: Toronto was great and Survivor Series was fun, but nothing people are going to go back and watch. At least the squashing of Lesnar gave people something to talk about for years to come.

NXT TakeOver Toronto and Survivor Series predictions!

on November 19, 2016 at 5:52 pm

survivor_series_predictions

This weekend WWE promises to make fantasy warfare real! You know what? I can kinda see it. Barely. In the distance. Goldberg returning is surely someone’s fantasy. The cruiserweights moving on over to Smackdown would definitely be a fantasy of mine, and probably of the cruiserweights too. Let’s dig on in to these predictions, starting with TakeOver:

NXT TakeOver: Toronto

NXT TakeOver looks good as always, but it’s three months after Brooklyn II and we’re still seeing two rematches from that show. Asuka isn’t even facing a regular member of the roster! Makes you wonder what they were doing these past three months.

Bobby Roode vs. Tye Dillinger
Bobby Roode finally found a babyface to fight that’s more over than him! While I think Bobby Roode was main roster ready before he walked through the doors of NXT, I think he’ll go on to hold the NXT Championship before getting called up, so with that in mind I’m predicting him to win this one. Sorry, Tye!
I predict: Bobby Roooooo!

The Authors of Pain vs. TM 61 in the finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic
I love Dusty Rhodes as much as the next guy, but when you have two underdeveloped teams fighting for a trophy when two much more accomplished teams are fighting for the titles on the same show, this feels more like a participation award. It’s tough to call a winner on this one, but I’m guessing Ellering will escape the cage and help his team win.
I predict: The Authors of Pain

The Revival vs. Team #DIY for the Tag Team Championships
Since I picked a heel team to win the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, I’m going to predict that Team #DIY are going to win the titles and then defend against the Authors of Pain next. Also the Revival dropping the belts will free them up to be called up and take the Hype Bros spot on Team Smackdown Sunday night (a bold prediction, I know).
I predict: Team #DIY

Asuka vs. Mickie James for the Women’s Championship
When Mickie was an active wrestler in WWE she was one of my favorites, but I still don’t think she has any chance of winning tonight. Even if she did I’d be upset because she didn’t really earn the title shot to begin with. Asuka’s going to hold on to that belt until Ember Moon takes it from her.
I predict: Asuka

Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Samoa Joe for the NXT Championship
I have to believe Shinsuke will win and Joe will be called up to start cracking heads on Raw. Samoa Joe’s time for NXT has come and gone and it’s time to make way for other guys like Bobby Roode to be the top heel for a while.
I predict: Nakamura!

Survivor Series Predictions!

Survivor Series definitely ranks number four in the “Big Four” WWE PPV’s with a concept that even Vince McMahon described as outdated a few years back. I appreciate them turning it into a brand vs. brand storyline this year to spice things up, but the brand split still feels too new for me to get excited about any of the matches.

The Brian Kendrick vs. Kalisto- if Kalisto wins the cruiserweight division will be moved to Smackdown.
Why does Kalisto care about the cruiserweights moving? Why is he the choice to move them to Smackdown? This whole stipulation makes no sense, but I have to believe they wouldn’t have made it if they didn’t plan on moving the whole division. Honestly, the new cruiserweights-only show, 205 Live, airing after Smackdown tells me Kalisto will win.
I predict: Kalisto!

The Miz vs. Sami Zayn for the Intercontinental Championship- If Zayn wins the title will be transferred to Raw.
I think the stipulation on this one is a red herring and Miz will safely hold on to the championship. I don’t think Smackdown would be as strong with just one title that all the guys can fight for, and two midcard titles on Raw would be redundant.
I predict: The Miz!

Team Smackdown vs. Team Raw Survivor Series Elimination Matches
With nothing at stake and to real reward or reason for these teams to fight it’s really hard to predict any of the outcomes. The storyline between each and every team is that there is friction between all the members, so while I don’t doubt that some team members will turn on their brand, I’m not sure which ones will do it. I’m grasping at straws, but my predictions are…

The tag team match will go to Smackdown after a Raw team member screws over the New Day.
The Women’s match will go to Raw, because Charlotte is the top heel out of all the women and it will be a nice feather in her cap.
The Men’s singles match will go to Smackdown because Shane is on their team, and I’m not betting against a McMahon.

Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg
I can’t imagine a surer bet this weekend than Lesnar winning. WWE hates having Lesnar lose to anyone and there’s been no indication that Goldberg will even stick around past this one match. The real uncertainty is whether or not Bill will make it out uninjured. I don’t think so.
I predict: Lesnar

So that’s Survivor Series! Again, I appreciate them doing something different for the show this year with Raw vs. Smackdown, but it doesn’t feel like the outcomes matter at all. Stephanie said the Raw wrestlers’ jobs depended on it, but does anyone really think she’s going to fire her top five stars? At least we know Goldberg vs. Lesnar will be better than their last match together. I mean, it has to be!
