Well, to be fair I was a fan of Johnny Curtis’ freaky gimmick before this, so I can safely say I was genuinely excited about Fandango from the start.
Agree with you on this one
Thanks for the comic
I totally agree with you on this one. Fandango is average at best and shouldn’t have been anywhere near WrestleMania.
Some people can get over despite dumb gimmicks, but it has to be a gimmick that the wrestler can pull off, and I don’t think Curtis does it well, as the voice he is putting on just sounds so bad and he looks so uncomfortable. Also, I have felt he hasn’t performed well in the ring either yet, which is why Wrestlemania was a bad time to give him his debut, as he really could have done better if he’d had 6 months under his belt at WWE to get more comfortable in the ring & on the mic.
How can you say he doesn’t pull off the gimmick well? I thought he brought it to life perfectly.
It seems like he’s trying to be more like the guys from “Blades of Glory” rather than an actual ballroom dancer. He sounds, moves and dresses nothing like a real ballroom dancer, but more like one from a really bad 80’s porn movie where the producers make guesses on what a ballroom dancer should be.
Given he is a heel, I’d say him going more ‘Blades of Glory’ is probably for the best. I love Joseph Park, but if he was just ‘the lawyer brother of Abyss’, there would be nothing in that. No. He’s got his little flashes of personality, he breaks traditions of the character in both a wrestling and true gimmick sense, and he hams it up to 11. As a character, Fandango is great. But, as the comic pointed out, this is just temporary. I’m enjoying it now, and I do like Johnny Curtis (or I don’t mind him…The pre-FCW NXT when Young, O’Neill and Bateman suddenly stopped competing was pretty fantastic in general), but whether or not they can keep this gimmick fresh or not is what will determine it’s success of failure. So, it will fail in the long run.
totally agreed !
agreed on joseph adorable park, NXT’s never ending season jhonny curtis being one of my favourites and fandango being awesome even before raw last monday for me !
I don’t think Johnny Curtis is mediocre, but other than that… yeah.
Though it could end up like the ‘Yes!’ chants right… right?!?
He’s green. Very Green. I’m just flabbergasted that “Fandango” went from someone many smarks don’t care about to “OMG He’s got a MEME”
How can someone who’s been wrestling for nearly 15 years be green?
This comic pretty much captures the whole situation perfectly.
At first I thought a lot of people were simply joking or being sarcastic, but it seems as though a lot of people have indeed jumped onto the Fandango bandwagon.
The worst part about it though is that I can picture a fourth panel to this comic of Vince McMahon rubbing his hands gleefully over how things have transpired and already plotting his next silly idea (hoping the fans will find an excuse/reason to embrace that too).
I know I’M riding that “BAHND-WAAAAH-GAAAAHN”!
Yeah, your post says it all…
We’ll find out if this crowd really did put Fandan-Curtis over or not this Monday I guess.
Personally I didn’t care for the “I refuse to wrestle” gag because Sandow did it so much better when he had his first live tv match
I don’t think he’s a mediocre wrestler. I think he’s doing a great job playing his character as a ballroom dancer.
James, you sound like you haven’t watched Johnny Curtis all that much.
Like most people that predicted the Fandango character to flop, he felt personally offended that he started getting legit heel heat. Now he feels lost that Fandango is super over, so he’s moved on to calling it a fad.
Curtis impressed me in his NXT days, and I think that he is more than mediocre.
I’m enjoying his new-found popularity.
same here 😀
and since you mentioned it, WHERE IS DERRICK BATEMAN (mr.USA) ?!! WE WANT HIM “NOW” !!!
as always your knowledge, foresight, and humor are shining bright!
I can say whole heartedly tha tthis character will go nowhere.
zack pack getting bigger
Well now that football cheerleaders are doing the Fandango dance and the song has appeared on the radio it’s TOTALLY swept the nation. It’s the new Harlem Shake
Ryder failed because Vince and the bookers did everything in their power to destroy him. Nobody’s going to cheer the damsel in distress… when he’s a guy.
I did… I’m all for gender roles being swapped.
I myself didn’t care either but the fact of the matter is, he looked like an absolute joke.
Lol!!!! Perfectly put
Yes/ No is still going on, so some wrestling memes do last. Hell, “what” is still popular.
Even still, I give Fandango’s popularity a month.
Yeah, wrestling memes never last. Just look at any of the chants that are still in constant use across the country at nearly every WWE show.
People were sold on the Fandango character -coming into WrestleMania-. Listen to his pop when he comes out. A friend of mine was at the event live and confirmed they were going nuts for him. The reaction to him the night after on Raw was an extension of that. He’s a better worker than most people who didn’t watch NXT are giving him credit for, too, and has Vince behind him (both of those things making him stand out from Ryder).
All that said, “Fandangoing” is a super dumb verb.
Yeah, wrestling memes never last!
Except “What?” has been happening for 11 years, people still shout WOO! in 2013 everytime any wrestler does a chop, “TWOOOOOOOOO” happens after every two-count, and YES! YES! YES!/NO! NO! NO chants still happen everywhere.
But yeah, wrestling memes aren’t sustainable, nah.
Also the only way anyone can consider Johnny Curtis mediocre is if they don’t ever watch him wrestle.
I am not a fan of his gimmick or his ability in the ring myself. His theme song is pretty darn catchy though. Even still I don’t see him lasting very long without something more.
It’s not that any of us think he’s going to be the next World Champion. We’re just happy to see (A) a fresh character, (B) who is getting over and (C) whose theme tune might actually replace that bloody “what?” chant finally. It’s the same reason we can’t hate Ryback. The “feed me more” chant is just too much fun.
Seriously, it’s professional wrestling. It’s meant to be fun, James. Don’t complain just because everyone isn’t Lance Storm.
I agree with Stephen.
Oh sweet jesus
Botchedspot has done it again
Da da dah duh duh
Fan Dan GOOOO
relax guys …
I don’t think he meant anything like “I hate fandango !” or “even if I like fandango, I know people will not cheer him for long !” … he was just being funny and joking and it was certainly a beautiful piece of art if you didn’t take it seriously !!
I, for one, have cheered jhonny curtis since NXT, cheered him as fandango since the first promo and will keep cheering him and supporting him with the people “fandangoing” or not !!!
he’s handsome, treats women well (god forbid anyone in the wwe treats women well and not call them “hoeskis” or “crazy” and such), got a sick finisher and an awesome entrance ! that’s why I cheer him !!
Alright, alright. So maybe I didn’t give Johnny Curtis enough credit when I called him “mediocre,” maybe I got a little caught up in exaggerating the truth. I’m a cartoonist and on the internet, it’s only natural! His match with Jericho at Wrestlemania was pretty good (far from the worst match of the night). Personally though I still see this going more along the lines of “Cody’s Moustache” than “What?” but only time will tell!
I agree on that …
and I want to say, great job, again, bro 😀 you’re the best !
also, I was happy for cody .. and I am still happy for him anyways and mark out for him until now ! the same is the situation with fandango for me !!
no, thank YOU, again, bro ;D
I think you are right about “Mediocre.” What has he done before now?
BTW, I love how the crowd is chanting for Justin Roberts…awesome 😀
do you watch NXT ?! that’s what he’s done before …
No. I’d like to see NXT though. I know he’s been on NXT, but that doesn’t make him extraordinary, dose it?
it’s not that “being on NXT = extraordinary” immedietly, it’s that he, himself, is pretty much a humorous, talented and overall lovable and adorable guy ! and having FREAKING DERRICK BATEMAN as his rival there ? it was the best pre-fcw-NXT storyline for me ever !!!
mediocre is being nice…the guy is down right boring
the guy has some talent inside the ring but what else??
actully, jhonny curtis’s strength was never in his wrestling skills .. but in his goofy and lovable cool personality all the time ! that’s what else !!
